“KANNAPOLIS -Judge Randall Ray Combs, 41, 1611 Eastwood Drive, died Wednesday (Aug. 30, 2000) at Duke Medical Center, Durham, after three months of serious illness.

Born July 24, 1959, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Combs was a son of Ray Combs, Kannapolis, and Sue Whitley Barker, North Wilkesboro.

He is a 1977 graduate of South Rowan High School, China Grove. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, graduating in 1981.

Honors and activities include the George Foster Hanks Scholarship, 1977; dean’s list, fall 1980; chairman, Student Lease Judicial Board; president, Interfraternity Council; National Convention delegate, Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity; varsity marksmanship team; intramural sports; marching and pep bands.

He received his juris doctor degree in May 1986 from Campbell University School of Law.

Additional honors and activities included graduating tenth in his class of 85 and having top academic honors; Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society; Who’s Who Among American Law Students; Campbell Law Review Staff; teaching assistant; Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity treasurer; North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers, Student Division parliamentarian; case summary writer, ‘Campbell Law Observer$; Intramural Client Counseling Competition participant.

For several years, Combs was with Williams, Boger, Grady, Davis &Tuttle, P.A., Kannapolis, and a partner in general practice law, focusing on domestic, real estate, collections and miscellaneous civil litigation.

Since February 1998, Combs was a district court judge for 19A Judicial District.

Professional memberships include American Bar Association, North Carolina State Bar, Cabarrus County Bar Association, North Carolina Bar Association; and North Carolina Association of District Court Judges. He was a former member of the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers.

Some of his numerous affiliations include: Cabarrus Baptist Association, Cabarrus Regional Chamber of Commerce member, Kannapolis Chamber of Commerce, Kannapolis Advisory Commission on Beautification, Friends of the Library, Kannapolis Branch; Gideons International, Kannapolis Camp,North Kannapolis Baptist Church, Kannapolis Bible Teaching Association, Hospice of Cabarrus County, Cabarrus Meals on Wheels and Historic Cabarrus.

He was nominated for the N.C. Bar Association 1993 Pro Bono Service Award.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include wife Donna Creel Combs; daughters Jessica Lynn and Rebekah Leigh Combs, both of the home; and sister Sheila Williams, Concord.

Services: 4 p.m. Friday, North Kannapolis Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Coy Privette and the Rev. Mark Beasley. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Eastwood Drive.
